I finally received comment from Superintendent Darlene Schottle past the agreed upon statement time. Essentially she declined to comment based upon the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. The article I wrote however relates to law and policy. The facts are stated as hypothetical since no investigation has been published. There is nothing in the act which would prohibit Kalispell School District Superintendent to make statements as to policy. For example, "allegations such as these are given the highest priority" or "The school district will conduct a prompt investigation conducted by a neutral third party and promptly publish the results". I believe this is all the public is seeking the truth and reaffirmation that immediate appropriate actions be taken to protect our children. I do not believe hiding behind a privacy act that does not implicate the reassurance the public is looking for in regards to proper investigation, disclosure and disciplinary policy, answers the question. It appears more of a smokescreen under the circumstances.
